What Is Paraquat?
Paraquat dichloride, more commonly referred to as paraquat, is an industrial-strength, non-selective herbicide. Due to its high toxicity, paraquat is only cleared for commercial use. Despite being banned in at least 32 other countries, paraquat is fairly popular in U.S. agriculture and related industries. In fact, its use is on the rise in the U.S., even though the first paraquat Parkinson’s disease lawsuit was filed in the country in 2017.

What Is Paraquat Poisoning?
In addition to a heightened risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, those exposed to paraquat may experience paraquat poisoning, which can cause symptoms such as:
- Swelling in mouth and throat
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea/vomiting
- Diarrhea, which may contain blood
- Dehydration
- Low blood pressure
Heavy exposure can cause severe effects, including lung scarring and organ failure.
Paraquat poisoning typically happens after ingestion of contaminated food/beverage or from continuous exposure. It can also happen from skin exposure if the chemical comes into contact with skin for long periods of time or if it enters the body through injured skin.
