What Is Paraquat
Paraquat dichloride, more commonly referred to as paraquat, is an industrial-strength, non-selective herbicide. Due to its high toxicity, paraquat is only cleared for commercial use. Despite being banned in at least 32 other countries, paraquat is fairly popular in U.S. agriculture and related industries. In fact, its use is on the rise in the U.S., even though the first paraquat Parkinson’s disease lawsuit was filed in the country in 2017.
Paraquat is the active ingredient in several well-known and highly used weed killers, including:
- Gramoxone SL 2.0 Herbicide
Paraquat is not the active ingredient in Roundup, another common herbicide that has also been linked to numerous negative health conditions.
What is Paraquat Poisoning?
In addition to a heightened risk of developing Parkinson's disease, those exposed to Paraquat may experience Paraquat poisoning, which can cause symptoms such as:
- Swelling in mouth and throat
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea, which may contain blood
- Low blood pressure
Heavy exposure can cause severe effects, including lung scarring and organ failure.
Paraquat poisoning typically happens after ingestion of contaminated food/beverage or from continuous exposure. It can also happen from skin exposure if the chemical comes into contact with skin for long periods of time or if it enters the body through injured skin.
Emergency medical attention is critical if you or a loved one are showing signs of paraquat poisoning.
Anyone who experienced prolonged exposure to paraquat is most at risk of developing Parkinson’s disease and other health complications/conditions related to paraquat. This includes anyone who frequently used paraquat on the job, such as agricultural workers, as well as those who lived/live near industrial farms where paraquat was/is used.
The Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council has reported that long-term exposure to paraquat may increase the risk of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease by as much as 200 – 600%, suggesting a strong link between the chemical and the illness. In addition, paraquat has been associated with numerous other negative side effects, including paraquat poisoning. In some cases, paraquat exposure can even be lethal.
